Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one of Britain's most celebrated writers with his invention of the ultimate detective, Sherlock Holmes, completely altering the crime-fiction genre of the late 19th century. As well as this, he was a pioneering sportsman, a doctor of medicine, and champion of the underdog, helping to free two men who were unjustly imprisoned. Of most importance to the man himself, however, was his belief in life after death and the spreading of the 'vital message'.

He received his degree in medicine from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1881 and by this time had already began investigating Spiritualism and had began attending séances, a fact that rebuffs the more common idea that he found Spiritualism after his son, Kingsley, died in 1918. In fact, by that time, not only had he studied Spiritualism for almost 30 years, he had even declared the fact and spoken publicly about his beliefs. His first book on the afterlife, The New Revelation, was published in March 1918, some months before Kingsley's death, so it is fair to say that Arthur's belief in Spiritualism was not a knee-jerk reaction to his son's death.

That said, by now World War One was raging and peoples thoughts were on the dead and dying, and Doyle himself is quoted as saying; "I might have drifted on my whole life as a psychical researcher...but the War came, and it brought earnestness into all our souls and made us look more closely at our own beliefs and reassess our values."

One year after publishing The New Revelation, Doyle followed it up with The Vital Message, in which he shares his thoughts on skepticism, religion, psychic phenomena, and Jesus.

The New Revelation (Audible Audio Edition) Arthur Conan Doyle Stephen Gammond White Crow Books Books

This is Arthur Conan Doyle's first book on "spiritualism" meaning we survive bodily death. I have passed out many of these books accompanied by another book written by the husband of the medium after ACD passed on. The latter book is called "Arthur Conan Doyle's Book of the Beyond". Most people associate ACD with Sherlock Holme's but it turns out that he wrote SH to pay his bills as an aspiring doctor who wasn't making it money-wise. His real interest was spiritualism and it took him 30 years to make a 180 degrees turn around from a scientific materialistic background to a spiritual way of looking at life. This book chronicles his journey in making that transition. The second book from the Beyond is about his reconnecting with his family after his passing to let them know he was ok (" I am a happy man") and secondly to make some corrections to previously held views that he had while in body as we normally think of body.

The New Revelation (Audible Audio Edition) Arthur Conan Doyle Stephen Gammond White Crow Books Books Reviews

Not so good
IF YOUR INTO THIS KIND OF READING, VERY GOOD/
Doyle was convinced of life after death and sets out to "prove" it.
The photo evidence is very lacking however.
a good review of spiritualism. Well reasoned arguments.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle trained as a surgeon and wrote mystery stories with Sherlock Holmes the main protagonist and Dr Watson his assistant. But he was also intrigued by the supernatural and this book he shares his perceptions of what happens to us after we die. I borrowed the book from my father's library and read it when I was 15 or 16 years old and reread it a million more time in hard cover. I bought the digitized version a week ago and carry it in my 7th ( Cloud ) .
I have recently been reading Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" stories, and I have been fueled with curiosity for his other works. So, I picked up his 1918 book entitled "The New Revelation," which was his first book on the Spiritualism and on the afterlife.

I am glad to have see another side of Doyle's writings and reading his thought process on the subject, which is very interesting. This is a fairly short book, and he followed it up with The Vital Message. For those are interested in the afterlife or Spiritualism, this book is to be recommended.
This past week I finished reading 1500 pages of an annotated version of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock was born in 1854 and ACD in 1859. Much to my surprise it was written that the Sherlock Holmes stories were mainly created to pay the bills for the aspiring doctor ACD. His real interest was on spiritualism. From a materialistic background his original impulse was that psychic phenomena was bogus until he saw the names of some prominent scientists who believe in spiritualism. Thus began a search for his own truth. He did a 180 degrees turn and later believed that we are a Soul in a physical body. His original search began in this book and his conclusion is written in another small book called "The Vital Message". The dogma of science and religion is opposed to spirituality. Science has led to our many materialistic wonders and people in droves are turning away from the contradictory and simplistic answers of religion. It is a tough job to convince people embedded in our present scientific way of looking at things to look at the evidence postulating we are a Soul in a body and to bring people back from their turned off views of religion. ACD is very convincing in his presentations. A must read for anyone interested in what happens when our body dies and what happens to our Soul. And its only 73 pages long.
